Check the schedule of special events in Ocean City for the week around July 4, 2013.
If you're planning to be in Ocean City for the holiday week, here's what you need to know about the Fourth of July events schedule:
Fireworks: Ocean City's fireworks display starts at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, July 4. The display will be fired from a barge in the ocean off the Music Pier (between Eighth and Ninth streets on the Boardwalk). Music will piped through speakers on the Boardwalk and Asbury Avenue shopping district to accompany the display. Longport Media will simulcast the music on KOOL-FM 98.3, 1400 AM WOND, 1490 AM WIP, stream it live on its website and on the TUNEin smartphone application.
Bike Parades: In Ocean City, kids don't watch the Fourth of July Parade—they ARE the parade. Two bicycle parades—one at each end of the island—are scheduled for Thursday morning (July 4). The South Ocean City Improvement Association (SOCIA) parade goes from 40th Street to 53rd Street on Central Avenue and starts at 10 a.m. with registration starting at 9 a.m at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church (40th and Asbury). The Gardens Civic Association parade also begins at 10 a.m. with registration at 9 a.m. at the base of the Ocean City-Longport Bridge. Registration for both parades is free.
Prizes will be distributed for the top three in the following categories in the South End parade: ages 3 & under, ages 4 through 7, ages 8 & over, family and groups (over 25 or more). No pre-registration is necessary, just show up that morning, sign up and ride or march.  Besides the multitude of bicycles, other participants include the Miss Night inVenice contestants, Miss Ocean City, Little Miss Ocean City, and Ocean City Firemen. Prizes and free refreshments will be distributed at the playground (53rd and Haven) as well as patriotic music. SOCIA has sponsored the event since 1954. Last year there were more than 800 participants.
Kite-Flying Contest: Kite Festival between the Ocean City Music Pier and 10th Street on the beach at 7 p.m. with registration at 6 p.m. sponsored by Air Circus.Â
