OCEAN CITY, NJ — Heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding are expected this weekend in Ocean City, postponing the Jeep Invasion set for Saturday.

The annual Boardwalk event will instead be held on Oct. 15, city officials said.

A strong coastal storm will move across the region on Saturday. Sustained northeast winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph and heavy rain will combine to cause moderate coastal flooding.

Water levels are predicted to crest in the hours around high tide on the bay side (Ninth Street Bridge) of Ocean City at 3:10 p.m. on Saturday. High tide on the bay side of Strathmere near Corson's Inlet is at 2:52 p.m. Saturday.

The NWS predicts a water level of 6.8 feet on the mean low water scale (MLW). By comparison, the peak water level last month during new moon tides reached about 5.6 MLW. The typical high tide in Ocean City is between three and five feet.

Residents should be prepared to have their vehicles moved to safe places well in advance of Saturday's high tide.

"For your safety and the protection of your vehicle and neighboring properties, never attempt to drive through flood waters, and do not drive around barricades," the OEM said.

For those who need to move vehicles, parking at all municipal lots will be free, but access may be limited during peak tides. Roads closer to the beach, such as Wesley and Central avenues, are typically at higher elevation.

Parking is also available at Trinity United Methodist Church at 20 North Shore Rd in Marmora, though residents are asked to watch out for people and to park away from the Nursery School entrance and church building.
