Dear Friends:

Today I had the pleasure of taking part in a number of events to commemorate the start of the summer season here in Ocean City.

At 8:30 am a mile long ribbon was cut on the boardwalk to officially open our beaches.  At the same time Governor Christie and others up and down the coast were participating in similar events. An hour later I joined our downtown merchants at their own ribbon cutting along Asbury Avenue.  The spirit of both events was of course more meaningful than most years, as we demonstrate to the region that Ocean City is truly ready to welcome our summer guests.

At noon I joined our beach patrol for their official “Unlocking of the Ocean” for the season.  That was followed by the “Business Person’s Swim.”  A spirited group of a hundred or so business owners and others took the first official dip.  The water temperature made this a rather quick swim.  Although invited to participate I did decline – maybe next year!

Along with the Chamber of Commerce we cut ribbons at ten new Ocean City businesses today.  I welcome them all to this great community and wish them the best of luck.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the City’s team members and the City Council.  They have worked hard and done a great job to have us ready for the season.

I hope you will take the time to join us at Veteran’s Memorial Park at 11:00 am Monday to reflect on what this holiday is really all about.  It will be my honor to join the members of our local VFW and American Legion Posts for this annual event in remembrance of those who gave their lives so that future generations of Americans might live in freedom.

I hope you and your families have a wonderful weekend in America’s Greatest Family Resort!

Warm regards,

Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
