Letter From Mayor: Tax Deadline Extended, Still No Flood Maps

Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian posts his weekly update to citizens.

Dear Friends:

A few quick updates:

  1. Tax bills were mailed out earlier this week.  The grace period for taxes due August 1, 2013 has been extended to August 20, 2013.  Please be advised that if tax payments are not received by the end of the grace period, the law requires interest to be charged back to the August 1 due date.  Postmarks cannot be accepted.  The extension applies to the August 2013 tax quarter only.
  2. This year is very much like those years in which a property revaluation took place due to the large number of properties whose assessments were adjusted to make them consistent with true market value.  The effect of this on taxes is that some owners will notice a tax increase, some a tax decrease and many will pay about the same as last year.  This proactive approach by our Tax Assessor’s Office results in the tax burden being spread equitably among all properties.
  3. The City still has not seen the next set of “working maps” from FEMA.  We were previously advised to expect to see these maps in late July, so hopefully we will know something further any day now.

Have a great weekend!
