Live World War II-Era Munition Found On Jersey Shore Beach

Two city blocks in Wildwood were evacuated Saturday after a resident found a World War II-era munition on the beach and brought it home.

WILDWOOD, NJ — Two city blocks in Wildwood were evacuated Saturday after a resident found a live World War II-era munition on the beach and brought it to their home, police said.

At 10:10 a.m., officers from the Wildwood Police Department Uniformed Patrol Division responded to the 100 block of West Pine Avenue after receiving a report that someone had found a munition, police said.

While the Atlantic City Police Department Bomb Squad responded to the area and examined the munition, several homes on Pine and Maple Avenue were evacuated, according to Wildwood police.

“The munition was identified as a 120mm projectile from the World War II era and found to be a live round. Members of the Atlantic City Bomb squad removed the munition from the residence and transported it to the beach, where it was rendered safe,” police said.

After about 2 1/2 hours the area was deemed safe and all residents were permitted to return home, police said.

“The Wildwood Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors that if you located any munitions on the beach or anywhere else in the city, please do not touch or handle them. These munitions are dangerous and should only be handled by qualified personnel,” police said.
