Man Stabs NJ Firefighter During NYE Ocean Rescue
The firefighter was hospitalized for hypothermia following the "challenging" rescue, officials said.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Emergency personnel from the Atlantic City Fire Department and Atlantic City Police Department responded to a report of a man in distress in the water on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred off the jetty near Rhode Island Avenue Beach at around 12:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, fire units observed an adult man, later identified as Christopher Treadway, 31, of Mays Landing, floating beyond the jetty.
Rookie firefighter Dominic Gitto entered the water using a rescue longboard to reach the Treadway. During the rescue attempt, Treadway resisted contact and tried to stab Gitto with a concealed screwdriver, officials said. Gitto successfully deflected the weapon and continued rescue efforts despite the Treadway's "aggressive behavior," according to authorities.

Multiple attempts to secure Treadway onto a rescue sled were slowed down by continued resistance. Responders ultimately formed a chain to pull him into shallow water, where he again became combative, according to police.

Gitto’s dry suit began taking on water during the operation, exposing him to the frigid ocean temperatures. After exiting the water, Gitto experienced symptoms of acute hypothermia. He was taken to Atlantic City Medical Center, where he was treated and released later that afternoon.

Police officers gained control of Treadway and took him into custody. He was taken by Emergency Medical Services for medical treatment and admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit for evaluation.
Treadway is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, resisting arrest, and obstruction.
“This was an extremely dangerous and unpredictable rescue,” said Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans. “Firefighter Gitto was sworn into the Department just a few months ago, and his actions demonstrated courage, professionalism, and personal sacrifice."
