New Crosswalk Will Be Added Near Ocean City School

New safety improvements will soon be added to the intersection of 20th Street and Bay Avenue near the Ocean City Intermediate School.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — New safety improvements will soon be added to the intersection of 20th Street and Bay Avenue to help Ocean City Intermediate School students cross the road safely.

During a council meeting last week, Mayor Jay Gillian announced that a student was nearly hit by traffic recently and another was struck last year, prompting the need for a change in that area.

The crosswalk will include vinyl reflective striping and flashing lights on the road shoulders. The user-activated lights will be timed to operate when students are going to school and coming home.

Cape May County has agreed to install the new crosswalk since Bay Avenue is a county road.

“We’re gonna try to make it so you see what’s going on down there,” Gillian said. “It’s a high-volume area down there, so it’s something we need to keep our eyes on.”

Work is scheduled to begin on the intersection starting this week over a four to six week period.

Gillian also said he would support building a new parking lot at the Intermediate School for teachers, parents and visitors.
