Ocean City Events: Fireworks on Saturday Cap Full Schedule

What you need to know about the week ahead.

There's a lot going this week as Ocean City heads into the final two weeks of the traditional summer season. Here are some of the highlights:

Monday, Aug. 19

JAY AND THE AMERICANS: 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. The pop music sensations from the 1960s. Notable hits included “Come a Little Bit Closer,” and “Cara Mia.” Inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002. Tickets $30.

Tuesday, Aug. 20

GERSHWIN AND ALL THAT JAZZ: The Ocean City Pops perform the special concert at 8 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier, featuring music from "Porgy and Bess" in concert version with soloists Robin Wilson, Lourin Platt, the Queen Mary Singers plus Ed Wise and his New Orleans Jazz Band. Sponsored by Manco and Manco in memory of Frank Manco. Tickets $20/12. Call Pier Box Office, (609) 525-9248.

MUMMERS NIGHT ON THE BOARDWALK: String bands strut the Ocean City Boardwalk on Tuesday evenings. Look for the following.
  • Avalon String Band - 6th-10th Streets 
  • Kensington String Band - 10th - 14th Streets

 

Wednesday, Aug. 21

CHARACTER NIGHT: Character Parade starts on the Ocean City Boardwalk at 14th Street at 6 p.m. stopping for a Meet-and-Greet with children at the Ocean City Music Pier and then finishing at Fifth Street. The event includes costumed mascots such as Martin Z. Mollusk (Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce), Elmo (Shirt Shack), Preppy the Alligator (Prep’s Pizza), Fry Guy (Jilly’s French Fry Factory), Ice Guy (Rita’s Water Ice), Wonder Bear (Gillian’s Wonderland Pier), Pirate (Air Circus) and Peace Bear (Peace, Love & Yogurt). Get there early to get an Ocean City Passport Book filled with a fun activities for kids and families, and blank pages for character autographs!

Thursday, Aug. 22

PROGRAM ON SEALS THAT VISIT OCEAN CITY: The Marine Mammal Stranding Center will give a free presentation on the four species of seals that visit Ocean City during the winter. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Free Public Library. See more information.

OPEN HOUSE AT 14TH STREET PIER: As part of its centennial celebration, the Ocean City Fishing Club invites the public to tour the 14th Street Fishing Pier between 6 and 8 p.m. See more information.

FAMILY NIGHT ON OCEAN CITY BOARDWALK: Free outdoor entertainment on the Boardwalk will include the following (sponsored by Playland's Castaway Cove):

Friday, Aug. 23

GREASE:  The Greater Ocean City Theatre Company will present the musical GREASE at the historic Ocean City Music Pier on August 23 at 7:30 PM and August 24 at 2:00 and 7:30 PM. The cast of GREASE is comprised of students from the 9th-12th Grades OCTC Junior Company. Tickets for GREASE are $15 for seating in the Orchestra Section and $13 for the Solarium. Saturday, Aug. 24

FIREWORKS AND THANKSGIVING: Ocean City will thank visitors with a special summer Thanksgiving celebration on Saturday. The celebration will begin at 7:30 p.m. in front of the Ocean City Music Pier with a program of nondenominational “prayer and song” by local clergy and area choirs. At 8 p.m., entertainment on the Boardwalk will feature bands, strolling entertainers and costumed characters. At 10 p.m., there will be a fireworks display ignited from a barge in the ocean and visible from the Boardwalk. See more information.
