Ocean City High School Graduates 314 Students

The Ocean City High School Class of 2013 graduated Wednesday (June 19) on a cool and clear evening that highlighted the school's spectacular seaside location.

The outdoor commencement took place at the high school's Carey Stadium, adjacent to the beach and boardwalk, and honored 314 graduating seniors.

Members of the Class of 1963, which graduated 50 years ago, were recognized during the ceremony, but the highlights were the two student speeches.

In valedictorian and salutatorian addresses, David "D.J." Gilhooley and Nathan Roberts shared themes about the collective journey of the Class of 2013. (See Ocean City High School's Top 10 scholars.)

Gilhooley, the valedictorian, recalled the unimaginable void before the introduction of the first iPhone shortly before the class entered high school.

"Those were OUR dark ages," Gilhooley said. "How did we survive? No Skype? No texting? Did we actually call people? Did we actually see them in person?"

But Gilhooley asked his classmates to "take out your earbuds, put your phone away, and listen to the silence."

He asked them to use the silence to get to know themselves and their expectations and to chart their futures.

And in the process, while technology connects them to every corner of the map, he asked them to remember that "true community starts at home."

"You can have 2,000 likes, but don't forget about your parents, your little sister, the friends who have been with you since childhood, the teachers who molded you into what you are today," Gilhooley said. "This technology is new, its shiny, and, sure, we can enjoy it. But it doesn't replace our real connections, the ones that we need to hold onto when we move into this next stage of our lives."

Salutatorian Nathan Roberts quoted Ernest Hemingway: "It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end."

Roberts recalled the nervousness of his first week in school as a freshman and meeting the "two energetic knuckleheads" who became his best friends.

"Four years ago, we were just another group of freshmen, preparing to start four more years of education," Roberts said. "But now our names have been etched into the history of this building.

Roberts asked his classmates to start new journeys and new chapters "with open minds and a clean slate."
