Proceeds will benefit the daughter of an Ocean City woman who died of cancer at age 26.

An Oct. 11 charity fashion show — Fashion by the Beach — will remember a 26-year-old Ocean City mother who died in January of a rare form of cancer, leaving behind a 21-month-old daughter.

The event honors Shaina Horton and starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Steve & Cookies by the Bay in Margate. The Lindsy James Salon & Color Studio with Steve & Cookies are sponsoring the fundraiser.

All proceeds will go into a college fund for Horton's daughter, Zoe, and to aid cancer patients and their families at Cooper Medical Center.

Horton was known in Ocean City as an Accent Gallery employee, a volunteer with Community Art Projects, a resident of the 900 block of Asbury Avenue and a friend to a lot of people in town.

Her daughter, Zoe, was born in 2010 in perfect health, but soon after doctors discovered that a form of uterine cancer, choriocarcinoma, had been spreading inside Horton during her pregnancy. Horton died 21 months later.

Horton used a $75,000 grant to convert part of the Atlantic City Free Public Library into a "Teen Space." Horton was born and raised Somers Point before moving to Ocean City. She is a graduate of Mainland Regional High School (2003) and Philadelphia University (2007) with a degree in Interior Design and Architectural Studies.

Money raised towards this event will go into a 529 college fund for Zoe. A portion of the proceeds will be to support Shaina’s vision of aiding longterm cancer patients and their families at Cooper Medical Center.

Lindsy Casey, owner of the Lindsy James Salon & Color Studio, who is heading the fashion show said, “I wanted to recognize Shaina Horton and bring light to this story because she was a beautiful person inside and out..”

Lindsy felt there was, “no better way to honor Shaina then through fashion and textiles, which was her true passion.”

She went on to explain both she and Shaina were both pregnant with their first child at the same time and they had an instant connection. After each having baby girls, the moms spoke of how they would like them to be good friends. Ms. Casey said when Shaina became sick, her heart broke for her and for little Zoe.

After discussing Shaina’s story and the idea for a charity fashion show with Cookie Till, owner of Steve & Cookies by the Bay, Till confirmed she definitely wanted to be part of the event.
