CAPE MAY COUNTY - A single-engine plane crashed while leaving a South Jersey airport Thursday evening, federal officials said.

The single-engine Piper PA-28 crashed while leaving Cape May Airport in Lower Township at around 7:15 p.m., a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration told Patch.

The downed plane was found in the north section of the runways, according to Lower Township police.

None of the three passengers were injured, Lower Township police said.

The plane is registered to John Smith of the Cold Spring section of Lower Township, according to federal aircraft registration records.

The FAA is currently investigating the incident, the spokesperson said. The cause of the crash is currently unknown, police said.
