Saturday's Walk for the Wounded Includes Full Day of Events

The third annual Walk for the Wounded raised more than $57,000 for wounded veterans and their families, and this year's event aims to surpass that mark on Saturday, Sept. 29.

Hundreds of walkers are expected to participate in the three-mile trek on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Here are the details on how to participate:

WHAT: The fourth annual Walk for the Wounded, a three-mile walk on the Boardwalk aimed at drawing attention to the plight of returning soldiers and their families, while raising funds to help meet the critical needs of these families.

WHERE: Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and Boardwalk.

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 29

• 8:30 a.m.: Registration begins; Tidal Wave band performs; all adults raising $50 or more receive a Walk T-shirt (while supplies last)
• 9:15 a.m.: Emcee Phil Martelli makes opening remarks
• 9:20 a.m.: Ocean City American Legion presents colors; Benediction and Pledge of Allegiance
• 9:30 a.m.: Michelle Dawn Mooney of WMGM TV40 performs the National Anthem
• 9:35 a.m.: Ocean City Home Bank President and CEO Steve Brady speaks
• 9:45 a.m.: Peggy Baker, Founder of Operation First Response, speaks
• 10:00 a.m.: Sgt. First Class Joshua Ferguson and Corporal Ronny Porta offer remarks; Walk organizers present Ronny Porter with a surprise
• 10:10 a.m.: Tidal Wave band plays; Ocean City American Legion retires colors; the three-mile walk begins as the Ocean City High School marching band leads walkers down the Boardwalk from the Music Pier to 14th Street
• 1 p.m.: All children who raise $10 or more receive a wristband for rides at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier

WHO: Operation First Response, a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to wounded soldiers and their families .       

Sergeant 1st Class Joshua Ferguson, United States Army’s 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, who was wounded in 2007 when his truck was struck by a roadside bomb. 

Corporal Ronny Porta, United States Marine Corps, who suffered life-threatening injuries in 2007 when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device near Al Asad, Iraq, in 2007.
