PARAMUS, NJ — A go-to bookshop in Paramus for bibliophiles and aspiring writers is set to close after 28 years to provide space for an adult with disabilities day program.

Barnes & Noble at 765 Route 17 announced on social media that the store is closing on Feb. 11, as the landlord had "chosen to not renew (the) lease" and is "redeveloping the site."

"Although it is always sad to see landmark stores close down locations in town," borough Mayor Christopher DiPiazza said, "I look forward to the new tenants who will be filling a great need for extraordinary people who visit and live in our borough."

Many in the community also expressed sadness when the news hit social media.

"No other store has the variety and volume of inventory you do," one Facebook user commented. "I hope you're able to find another location that can be just as good, and soon."

In fact, the bookstore said there are hopes to return close to the existing location before long, and that retail team members are looking for a new location.

"Unfortunately, we don't have a location for our new building yet, but we will be back," the store said. "We thank our wonderful Paramus booksellers, and know that they look forward to welcoming you back to their new store just as soon as this has been found."

The store added that the employees would continue selling books in other local B&N stores.

"Thank you for all the years and memories that you have all brought to this location," the Paramus store said. "It has truly been our honor and privilege to be your bookseller."

The space, occupied by B&N, was purchased by New Concepts for Living, which plans to open a day care program there for adults with developmental disabilities. The "state-of-the-art" center will be "significantly larger" than its Rochelle Park location, the nonprofit said on its website.

As B&N searches for a new nearby location, the store said that patrons could visit the next-nearest location in Hackensack at The Shops at Riverside.

"We can't wait to see you again," the Paramus store said.
