Infant In Critical Condition After Nearly Drowning In Paramus: Police

A 1-year-old boy nearly drowned at a pool at his home Monday in Paramus, and is now at Mt. Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital, police said.

PARAMUS, NJ — A 1-year-old boy is in critical condition after he nearly drowned at a pool at home Monday night on Beechwood Drive in Paramus, Police Chief Kenny Ehrenberg said.

His mother pulled him from the pool, and she, police and EMS performed CPR. The child was taken to the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, where he regained a pulse, and then transferred to Mt. Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital, police said.

As of 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, the child is still alive, police said.

Drowning is a leading cause of accidental injury-related death in children ages 1 to 4, and a second-leading cause of injury death in children ages 1 to 14, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

In Teaneck on Sunday, a 7-year-old drowned in a swimming pool at a house on Westervelt Place, and was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
