PARAMUS, NJ — A man and woman were arrested on Monday after police saw them driving on Route 4 at a high rate of speed and gave chase. The pair only stopped after their Mercedes lost a wheel, police said.

Jonathan Valentin, 28, of Maywood was charged with eluding police, and Nathale P. Mangubat, 27, of the Bronx was charged with hindering apprehension, police said.

Police said that shortly before 1:30 a.m., Officer Sean Casey saw a black Mercedes-Benz E30 traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 4 West.

He tried to stop the car, but the driver accelerated and made "evasive maneuvers," police said.

Casey got the license plate number, and soon after, the car was spotted in the parking lot of Miller’s Ale House in Paramus, police said.

The Mercedes fled police onto Route 4 East, police said. Casey saw it lose its driver's-side tire, "yet it continued to travel recklessly on three wheels, posing an imminent threat to public safety," police said.

The car eventually came to a stop near Teaneck Road.

Valentin was taken to the Bergen County Jail.

Mangubat was charged and released on her own recognizance. The investigation is continuing, said Chief Robert M. Guidetti.
