He was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He was listed in critical but stable condition as of the afternoon, prosecutors said.

The other student was arrested at the scene and is in custody, prosecutors said.

During the incident, Fort Lee High School was placed on lockdown, prosecutors said.

"While the investigation continues, security measures remain in place at the school as a precaution," prosecutors said. "More information for parents and families of the school district has already been directly provided by the Fort Lee Board of Education and the Fort Lee Police Department."

Prosecutors encouraged the community to avoid the area while the investigation continues and security is increased.

Both students involved are juveniles and no other details are being released as of now, prosecutors said.
