More than 300 golfers will tee off at two of the borough's country clubs in mid-August for the 122nd U.S. Amateur Golf Championship.
PARAMUS, NJ — More than 300 golfers from around the world will tee off in Paramus mid-August, as they compete in the premier amateur golf event to be held at two of the borough's country clubs.
Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club are hosting this year's U.S. Amateur Golf Championship from Aug. 15 through 21, starting at 7 a.m., the U.S. Golf Association said on its website.
After the first two rounds of the tournament, the 64 players who "make the cut" will compete in match-play rounds, held at Ridgewood, in order to advance, City Lifestyle reported.

Ridgewood has not hosted the championship since 1974, when Jerry Pate, who won the U.S. Open in 1976, was declared the winner. Many famous American golfers, such as Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Phil Mickelson, have won the championship prior to making the leap to professional golf, the sporting events website Koobit said in an overview of the competition.
Ridgewood is looking for volunteers — 16 years of age or older — to help conduct the event. If interested, visit the Ridgewood Country Club's website to register or find out more.
