'Cake Boss' Cousin Gives West Brook Kids Sweet Lesson [VIDEO]
Frank Amato of Carlo's Bakery of Hoboken and Ridgewood and from the "Cake Boss" TV show paid a visit to the students in the Italian classes at West Brook Middle School.
It's not every day students can say their time in the classroom was "sweet and delicious" or in the case of the students in the Italian classes at West Brook Middle School "dolce and delizioso."
Thanks to a special visit from Frank Amato, Jr. cousin of TV's the "Cake Boss" and Carlo's Bakery fame, the students in Gina Cirillo and Costanza Campagna's Italian classes did. The students took part in a fun interactive lesson in cupcake decorating, which exposed them to the culinary arts and Italian culture. And they got to practice their Italian too.
Cirillo, who is a "Cake Boss" family cousin through marraige as her husband Joseph Cirillo is Amato's first cousin, helped bring Amato to the school to expose the students to an instruction-based activity which allows them to learn in different ways visually, verbally and hands-on as well.

"It's a way to motivate students by taking them out of the classroom and allowing them to learn about different career paths," said Cirllo.
While "Cousin Frank" decorated dozens and dozens of cupcakes, he answered questions from the students who were instructed by their teachers to ask first in Italian and second in English. (See attached video)

Carlo's Bakery has three locations. The most local being Ridgewood, which is the newest one, as well as Hoboken and New York City.
"If I had to guess between cupcakes, birthday cakes and other items I probably do along the lines of 2,000 a day," Amato told a student who asked him how many items he bakes per day. In Hoboken, Amato says it's more like fives times that amount.
He also advised "never trust a skinny baker" reaffirming that he loves the baked goods the shops make but what he loves most is the items they make during the holidays.
"The rest of the stuff I can have at any time," said Amato.
At the end of the class Amato invited the Italian teachers to take a turn decorating cupcakes. Cirillo and Campagna were joined by East Brook Middle School teacher Elisabetta Bretin as the students cheered them on. (See attached video)
Amato is the first cousin of Buddy Valastro the "Cake Boss" of the TLC reality TV show and Carlo's Bakery locations.
