Diwali Initiative Donates Over 4.5K Pounds Of Food To Parsippany Food Pantry
Inspired by the Indian Hindu holiday, an additional several thousand pounds of food were donated to nearby towns, totaling over 10K pounds.
PARSIPPANY, NJ — Several organizations came together recently to donate thousands of pounds of food during Diwali, including in Parsippany.
Sewa Diwali is an initiative created by a collection of local organizations and individuals to collect and donate food for people in need.
Organizers believe in “Service to Humanity is Service to Divinity,” and have been collecting and donating food for local residents around the “Festival of Lights” since 2018.

“Society's well-being is a responsibility that we all share, and its fruits are only as nourishing as the care we put into it,” a statement read.
The food collected is donated to neighbors in need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

This year, around 4,500 pounds of food were donated in Parsippany, around 5,900 pounds of food in Morris Plains, and around 1,800 pounds of food in Montville.
“We are successfully running the Sewa Diwali food drive across 38 states in 200+ townships, with the involvement of 250+ organizations,” a statement read. “Last year, 720,000 pounds of food were donated across the nation, and this year's goal is to achieve 1 million donations across the nation.”
