Ex-NJ Boy Scout Camp Employee Admits Child Porn Charges: Feds

Authorities said the Morris County man had photos of children, who were secretly recorded using the bathroom at the camps where he worked.

LAKE HOPATCONG, NJ — A former Boy Scout camp employee has admitted to sharing files containing pornographic images of children, according to the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey.

William Mickel, 70, of Lake Hopatcong, has pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

Officials said Mickel worked at unspecified Boy Scout camps, and allegedly possessed and received the files between February and April 2022. Some of the videos in Mickel's possession showed children being secretly recorded using restrooms at the camps where he worked, authorities said.

Authorities said that Mickel distributed child pornography materials using multiple email accounts, and stored hundreds of images and videos on electronic devices in his home.

Investigators seized several laptop computers, a phone, and multiple data cards from his home in April of 2022, according to court documents.

The charges of distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography both carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and a fine of $250,000.
