Indian Independence Day Celebrated In Parsippany

The holiday commemorates the transfer of power to India from the UK in 1947, following more than 200 years of British rule.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — Parsippany officials and residents came together this weekend to celebrate the 79th Indian Independence Day.

Residents, officials, and others gathered around the town hall on Saturday morning to observe the annual flag hoisting ceremony, honoring the historic day of independence. The event was organized by the Township of Parsippany and the Indian American Seniors Association of Morris County.

The event was attended by several Indian-American local leaders, with Sanjeev Pandya serving as Master of Ceremony.

Also attending the ceremony was Parsippany mayoral candidate Pulkit Desai, who was given the honor of raising the Indian flag. He is running for office alongside Parsippany town council candidates Matt Kavanagh and Diya Patel.

“Today, we were honored to join our community for the Township’s Indian Independence Day Flag Raising Ceremony. It was a beautiful celebration of culture, history, and unity right here in Parsippany,” a candidate’s statement read. “We are grateful to everyone who came together to honor this important day, and we celebrate the rich heritage that strengthens our entire community.

Indian Independence Day, recognized on Aug. 15, marks the day in 1947 when India gained freedom from the United Kingdom. The day commemorates the anniversary of when the Indian Independence Act went into effect, transferring legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly, following more than two centuries of British rule.
