PARSIPPANY, NJ — The former Kmart building on Route 46 has sat mostly empty since November 2017, but that will soon change.

New Marshalls and HomeGoods stores are slated to open in the future in a section of the former retail chain store, according to the plaza's management company, Garden Commercial Properties.

The Kmart, which was located at 808 Route 46, was shuttered due to financial problems with Sears Holding, the store's parent company.

The closure of several Kmart and Sears stores was part of a "difficult but necessary step as we take actions to strengthen the company’s operations and fund its transformation," the company said in a statement.

According to site plans on the Garden Commercial Properties website, 50,000 square feet next to the upcoming Home Goods and Marshall's spaces remain unleased.

Other tenants in the Westmount-Arlington Plaza include ShopRite, Staples, Crunch Fitness, Wendy's, Home Depot and IHOP.

No planned opening date or timeline has been given for the future Home Goods and Marshalls.

The property manager did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.
