Letts served as Mayor of Parsippany between 1994 and 2005, when she chose not to seek reelection. She remained active in the township after leaving office, including with the local Kiwanis club.

"She also was a role model for women in Morris County, serving three terms as the first female mayor of the county’s most populous town, and later served on key countywide and regional boards and agencies, such as the Highlands Council and the Morris Tomorrow countywide think tank," the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders said in a statement.

The former mayor moved to Parsippany in 1967. Before that, the Pittsburgh native attended the University of Pittsburgh, and worked in the computer division of RCA, where she met husband of 56 years, Howard, an obituary says. She continued her career once the family settled in Parsippany, "designing and implementing large scale computer applications for major corporations."

Letts served on the Planning Board, the Board of Directors of the Parsippany-Troy Hills Senior Citizen Housing Corp., the Zoning Board of Adjustment, and the Parsippany Historical Society.

"Mayor Letts leaves behind a strong legacy of selflessness, service, and leadership to the Township and the residents she served," the township said.

"Mimi was committed to her town and to her county community, always striving to make Parsippany and Morris County a better place to live and work. She had unique political and personal skills, which included kindness and friendship, which made her a very special leader and person," the freeholders added.

In addition to her husband, Letts is survived by three sons, Howard of Charleston, S.C., Robert and his wife Kim of Marietta, G.A., Eric and his wife Allissa of Jupiter, F.L. and seven grandchildren (Diana, Victoria, Abigail, Zachary, David, Alexander and Rebecca).
