Parsippany's Longstanding Tree City USA Status Hits 49 Years

The program honors communities for their commitment to forest management. Parsippany has earned 'Tree City USA' status nearly 50 times.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — While Parsippany is often recognized for its bustling highways and commercial activity, the Arbor Day Foundation acknowledges the town for something else, awarding it 'Tree City USA' status for the 49th consecutive year.

The Tree City USA program has four key requirements: establishing a tree board or department, creating a tree-care ordinance, maintaining an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and holding an Arbor Day observance or proclamation,

"This is a very prestigious title to have, and our Parks and Forestry Department works very hard throughout the year to maintain this status," Mayor James Barberio said. "I thank them for all they do, and all of you children for coming here to celebrate with us."

Parsippany is one of just two municipalities in New Jersey to hold the 'Tree City' honor for 49 years, since the Arbor Day Foundation began awarding the status in 1976.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

According to officials, the Arbor Day Foundation has helped over 3,500 cities create and maintain tree cover. From Sibley, North Dakota (population 20) to New York City, Tree City USA supports communities in showcasing and nurturing their commitment to a greener, more sustainable place to live.
