POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — Dave "El Presidente" Portnoy, the self-proclaimed pizza expert and popular internet personality, hit the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach recently and reviewed two pizza places during his visit.

Joey Tomato's and Martell's got reviewed back to back, with Portnoy comparing the two pies. They received similar scores, with Martell's getting a slightly better score because he didn't want to leave them tied.

He seemed to put them in their own category, "boardwalk pizza," indicating he had different expectations of the pizza than he would have for a neighborhood pizzeria.

Portnoy started with the Joey Tomato's pizza.

"It's exactly what I think boardwalk pizza would be," he said, after taking his usual bite from the tip and a bite of the crust. "It's hot beach, boardwalk pizza. It's 2 a.m. pizza," adding there's an adage for late-night pies:

"If you're open late it ain't great," he said.

Portnoy tempered that a bit, saying of the Joey Tomato's pie, "it's better than you would expect."

"I actually thought it was going to be worse," he said, rating the pizza a 6.9 because it was more doughy.

"Late at night it's probably a 9," he said. "This is drunk pizza." Watch the review here.

As Portnoy was finishing his review, a man standing nearby said "Next time try Martell's." Portnoy decided there was no time like the present, and had the man — who identified himself as the pizzeria manager — bring him a pie.

The Martell's pie had a thinner crust, which Portnoy liked, but commented it was a bit overdone on the bottom.

He ended up rating the Martell's pizza a 7.1, and asked the Martell's manager if he agreed with the adage "If you're open late it ain't great."

"That's the one if it's open late it ain't great," the Martell's guy said, joking as he referred to Joey Tomato's pizza.

"They're both a 6.9 but I didn't want to give a tie," Portnoy replied.

Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Doug Vitale shared the Joey Tomato's review and weighed in on Portnoy's take.

"I personally think a 6.9 rating is a little low for Joey Tomato’s, but he (Portnoy) has 2.4 million followers and samples pizza all over the country and I have 1,000 followers and only eat NJ pizza, so who am I to judge."
