JERSEY SHORE, NJ — Dave "El Presidente" Portnoy, the self-proclaimed pizza expert and popular internet personality, hit the Jersey Shore recently for boardwalk pizza in Point Pleasant Beach and a coal-fired pie in Brick.

Portnoy, president and founder of Barstool Sports, had headed to Point Pleasant Beach to review Joey Tomato's but ended up reviewing Martell's at the same time.

His take?

"It's exactly what I think boardwalk pizza would be," he said of the Joey Tomato's pizza. "It's hot beach, boardwalk pizza. It's 2 a.m. pizza."

He added there's an adage: "If you're open late it ain't great."

He gave the Joey Tomato's pie a 6.9, and as he was finishing his review, the manager of Martell's pizzeria section told Portnoy he should try their pizza.

The verdict on Martell's? It had a thinner crust, and Portnoy gave it a 7.1, adding "They're both a 6.9 but I didn't want to give a tie."

In Brick he walked out of Nino's Coal-Fired Pizza on Brick Boulevard with a pie, raving about the lightness of the boxed pizza.

"When the box is this light my hopes go through the roof because light matters. Air matters. Light matters," Portnoy said, and as he opened the lid, he nearly dropped the pizza as the box tipped backward off his palm. He caught it just in time to save half of the pie, but four slices splatted on the pavement.

"I'd like to blame someone," he said as he stood slightly befuddled. "There's no wind. I'm talking about how light and airy it is, I got carried away."

Portnoy gave it a 7.4, "middle of the road, really good pizza," then cleaned up the pieces he dropped.
