UPDATE: Danger Not Over, Says Point Boro Mayor

Stay indoors at least through tonight, says councilman

Strong winds and rising tides are continuing to make driving dangerous in Point Borough, says Mayor William Schroeder.

"The strong winds and rising tides are a real danger!" Schroeder wrote in an email Sunday morning. "As the pictures on the news, Facebook and Internet services present, they are real and present. The danger has not passed.

"We are informing people to be safe and not return to a dangerous situation," he said.

In other words, now is not a good time for residents who have evacuated to attempt to return home and not a good time for anyone to be driving around the borough.

Borough Councilman Chris Leitner urged all borough residents, who have not evacuated, to stay indoors.

"Stay in, going out and about you might get stuck or get in the way of EMS," Leitner said. "We're also worried about this evening's high tide."

Although Irene has moved out of the immediate borough area, she left behind the mess of rising tides, strong winds and the potential for more flooding, Schroeder said.

Also, the borough area may have thunderstorms this afternoon, according to weather.com's forecast for the Point area.

"Think before you enter a flooded area!" Schroeder warned.

Leitner reported flooding in and near Beaver Dam Road, Northstream Parkway, the intersection of Bay and Bridge avenues and bayfront areas.

"There are a number of tree limbs that are down and many trees lying against the wires," he added. "There are also wires that need to be checked by JCP&L."

The borough's bridges are open.
