Ex-Treasurer Admits Stealing $100K From Point Beach Fire Company

Salvatore Umek used the Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company's money to pay off his credit card debt.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — The former treasurer of Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company 2 has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $100,000 from the fire company, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced.

Salvatore Umek, 46, of Point Pleasant Beach, pled guilty to theft before Superior Court Just Dina M. Vicari on Monday, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 20, at which time the state will be seeking a term of five years in prison and restitution of $107,517, Billhimer said.

An investigation determined that between February 2019 and November 2021 Umek, in his capacity as the fire company's treasurer, transferred more than $100,000 from the fire company's bank account to pay off his personal credit card debt. He also transferred some directly to his personal bank account and used the money for his own benefit, authorities said.

Umek surrendered himself to Point Pleasant Beach police on July 12, 2023 and was served with the charges.
