Fundraiser Dinner for Charles Haber Memorial Scholarship Fund in Point Boro Today

Charlie's younger brother, 15, goes to boro high school

A fundraiser dinner for the Charles Haber Memorial Scholarship Fund will be held at the borough Fire Department Station 75 on Route 88 from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

"Each year, we hope to reach out to more people so that we can, in turn, help more students each year with scholarships," said Mary Haber, the mother of Charles Haber who died unexpectedly in 2005.

He was a 17-year-old about to enter his senior year of high school who excelled in academics, cross-country and was a junior volunteer firefighter. He had planned to attend the Naval Academy after high school.

Funds from last year's dinner enabled the fund to give a $1,000 scholarship each to Susan Walsh and Kristen Romanowski this year. The girls graduated from the borough high school in June.

Scholarship recipients are chosen based on achievement in track or cross-country, academics, community service and leadership.

Applicants also have to write an essay explaining why they deserve to receive a scholarship, Haber said.

Last year, about 100 people ate at the dinner, which raised about $4,000.

Donations can be mailed to The Charles Haber Memorial Scholarship Fund, 1119 Sampson Rd., Point Pleasant.
