The National Weather Service says we should get a break from the rain all weekend with sunshine and comfortable temperatures in the upper 70s. Paul Bologna, the Montclair State biology professor and jellyfish expert, said clinging jellyfish already have been found in shallow waters in the area but there has been little information since sampling in early June. Posts in the New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook group have mentioned some bay nettles and a few other species showing up in recent weeks. Shallow water is the place you're most likely to encounter jellyfish.
A reminder about how to treat jellyfish stings: Immediately after the sting, apply white vinegar. This stops any stinging cells that have not fired in the tentacles. Rinse with salt water from bay or ocean. Do not use bottled water to rinse as osmotic shock will cause stinging cells to fire and continue to sting. Then wipe the area with a clean cloth or towel. Use over-the-counter pain medicines or Benadryl-type medicines, and calamine lotion for itching.
