JERSEY SHORE, NJ — The second weekend of the summer of 2025 may look a bit gloomy, but there is a promise of better days on the way.

What is in store for the last day of May and the first day of June? Here is a look from Patch at the beach forecast.

The short version? It's expected to rain. A lot. The National Weather Service is calling for rain and some thunderstorms Friday through Saturday. Sunday shows signs of clearing up and the sun paying us a visit.

If you're tempted to go in the ocean, be aware that the rip current risk is moderate and the water is still painfully cold. Those conditions increase the danger to people who dare to swim.

JELLYFISH
From the state Department of Environmental Protection and the New Jersey Jellyspotters

Paul Bologna, the Montclair State biology professor and jellyfish expert, said clinging jellyfish already have been found in shallow waters in New Jersey in May 2025.

Bologna, in a post in New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook group, did not say where the jellyfish have been found, but the non-native species that delivers a powerful sting inhabits shallow water.

The state Department of Environmental Protection and scientists at Montclair State University maintain a map showing where clinging jellyfish have been confirmed. It has not been updated for 2025 but in the past they have been found in the Metedeconk River, upper Barnegat Bay and at scattered points in the Cape May area.

A few lion's mane jellyfish also have been seen in Barnegat Bay, according to posts in New Jersey Jellyspotters.
