JERSEY SHORE, NJ — Beach season is finally here, with lifeguards in place during the week in most Jersey Shore towns beginning Monday.

It's also Father's Day weekend, and for some that may mean heading to the shore to sit on the sand while Dad fishes, or otherwise spending time with him.

If your weekend plans include time at the beach, here is a look at the weekend beach forecast from Patch.

After a few warm days this week, the National Weather Service is calling for chilly temperatures Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the mid-60s. Cloudy skies are expected to linger, but a reminder that clouds don't lower the risk of a sunburn from UV rays, so put on your sunscreen.

There is a possibility of rain, with a 60 percent chance on Saturday. As an glass-half-full optimist will tell you, that means there's a 40 percent chance of no rain. Sunday the chance of rain is much less, so it should be a good weekend.

Rip current risk is low this weekend, and the water temperature is warming up, but it's still below 70 degrees, so be mindful.

Remember that when lifeguards are not present, swimming is banned for the safety of everyone. Stay out of the water when the lifeguards are gone for the day.

Clinging jellyfish are out in force in shallow waters in Barnegat Bay, according to Paul Bologna, Montclair State biology professor and jellyfish expert.

Sampling in northern Barnegat Bay during the weekend of June 6 and 7 produced numerous clinging jellyfish, Bologna said in a post in New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook group.

The non-native species, which delivers a powerful sting, inhabits shallow water and has been found in the Metedeconk River and other shallow sites close to the water's edges, meaning those who like to wade need to take care. A map that had been maintained by the state Department of Environmental Protection and scientists at Montclair State University does not appear to be in use in 2025.

In addition to the clinging jellyfish, there have been some bay nettles spotted, including in Silver Bay in Toms River.

A reminder about how to treat jellyfish stings:

  1. Immediately after the sting, apply white vinegar. This stops any stinging cells that have not fired in the tentacles.
  2. Rinse the sting area with the salt water you are in (bay or ocean) to gently wash away any tentacles. Do not use bottled water to rinse as osmotic shock will cause stinging cells left behind to fire and continue to sting.
  3. Take a clean cloth/towel and wipe the area clean.

After, there are various ways to deal with the sting depending upon the severity. Over-the-counter pain medicine, Benadryl type OTC medicines, calamine lotion for itching.
