Man, 19, Charged With DUI After Bridge Avenue Crash In Point Pleasant

Police said the crash knocked out electrical service to the surrounding area for several hours.

POINT PLEASANT, NJ — A Middletown man has been charged with driving under the influence after he hit a utility pole on Bridge Avenue early Monday, Point Pleasant police said.

Scott Gilbert, 19, was charged following the crash that happened about 1 a.m. Monday, Capt. Christopher Leonhardt said.

Gilbert, who was alone in the car, hit a utility pole in front of Stop and Shop, damaging the pole and causing power outages in the surrounding area, he said.

As of about 11 a.m. power had been restored to all but one or two businesses, Leonhardt said, and crews from Jersey Central Power & Light were replacing the damaged pole.

Gilbert "was relatively uninjured," Leonhardt said, and was charged with several motor vehicle violations in addition to driving while intoxicated.
