POINT PLEASANT, NJ — Emergency repairs have been made to the fencing along the Point Pleasant Canal and plans are in place to replace the fence along the entire length of the canal in Point Pleasant, officials say.

The emergency repairs by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Army Corps' plans for more extensive improvements come after local officials sought help, Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey's 4th Congressional District said.

The federal government has allocated $3 million for the project, Smith's office said.

The 2-mile man-made canal connecting the Manasquan River and Barnegat Bay first opened to navigation in 1926. It is part of the Intracoastal Waterway.

"The Canal is vital as it connects Monmouth and Ocean County boaters to open waters, but as locals know, it is infamous for its swift and dangerous currents. We need to ensure that families can fish along the waterway and enjoy this engineering marvel while staying safely on land," Smith said.

Point Pleasant Mayor Robert Sabosik said the borough had been asking the Army Corps to repair the entire fence line for years, instead of piecemeal work that has been done.

"This fence line isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about the safety of our residents who fish and enjoy the scenic views the canal offers," Sabosik said.

"Congressman Smith has been instrumental in the revitalization of the Point Pleasant Canal from getting funding to repair the actual bulkhead a few years ago and finishing the job with the fence-line," Sabosik said.

The installation of the new fencing is anticipated to be done next summer, Smith said.

“I am grateful to our partners at the Army Corps of Engineers — our country’s master builders," Smith said. "Their work is second to none, and the Philadelphia District is always eager to help us help constituents."
