Tradition Of Jumping Off Point Pleasant Beach Railroad Bridge Dangerous: Police

A CBS2 television crew videotaped young boys jumping off the bridge into the Manasquan River

The "No Trespassing" signs on the narrow NJ Transit railroad bridge over the Manasquan River are there for a reason, Point Pleasant Beach Police Chief Joseph A. Michigan says.

“That is not a pool," the chief told CBS2."That is not a designated swim area. It’s very dangerous. The currents are very rough there too.

Michigan made the remarks after a CBS2 television crew videotaped a bunch of young boys flinging themselves off the narrow bridge into the water, with some even doing flips, last Friday. The bridge has gates, a bell and warning signs at the railroad crossing near Gull County Park.

“A lot of kayakers; a lot of people SCUBA diving and free driving, so there’s definitely a lot of activity,” he said.

“If we have to repeatedly talk to the same person, we’ll bring them in here and contact their parents, and hopefully, we’ll get an education that way,” the chief said.

NJ TRANSIT said it's aware of the repeat jumpers and will do a full assessment of what more can be done around the area to deter such behavior.
