Labor Day Vigil In Princeton Calls For Worker Protections, Social Program Funding

The "Workers Over Profit" vigil, scheduled for Monday, Sept. 1, at Hinds Plaza.

Labor advocates will gather in Princeton on Labor Day to honor working families and demand economic justice through a community vigil focused on workers' rights and social programs.

The "Workers Over Profit" vigil, scheduled for Monday, Sept. 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hinds Plaza on Witherspoon Street, will bring together community members to call for protection of working-class programs and an end to what organizers describe as corporate greed and political corruption.

Hosted by Resistencia en Accion NJ, the event will feature community speakers addressing demands including protection of Medicaid and Social Security, fully funded public schools and healthcare, and investment in social programs over military spending.

The vigil will include a moment of silence to honor those affected by what organizers call exploitation and systemic injustice. Speakers plan to highlight challenges facing immigrant workers, who organizers say face deportation threats, wage theft, and discrimination despite being essential to industries like agriculture, construction, and care work.

"Labor Day was born out of struggle, with working people demanding dignity, fair wages, and respect," organizers stated. "Today, those struggles continue as billionaires and corporations hoard record wealth."

The event aims to address what advocates see as ongoing economic inequality and threats to social safety nets, calling for policies that prioritize working families over corporate interests.
