Search Called Off, Nothing Found, at Carnegie Lake

A search of Carnegie Lake near the Harrison Street bridge was called off shortly before 3 p.m. on Wednesday after crews were unable to find a man whom witnesses reported they saw in the lake on Tuesday evening, Princeton Township Police Sgt. Michael Cifelli said.

Police closed off a portion of lower Harrison Street on Tuesday evening and rescue crews and a dive team spent three hours conducting a grid search in the water after a passing motorist initially reported seeing a man in the lake shortly before 5 p.m. 

Dive teams called off a search of the area around 8:30 p.m. after debris in the water during the nighttime search caused a safety concern for the divers.

The water is about seven to 10 feet deep in that area with a muddy silt floor, Cifelli said. The current was weak at the time of the report. 

"We received a call of a person in the water," Cifelli said. "We're following up on the credibility of the statement, but in the meantime we have to do due diligence to make sure if there is someone in the water, we do everything to help them."

Despite the search, crews found nothing in the water on Tuesday. Police were interviewing both witnesses late Tuesday night.

Fire police closed off Harrison Street between Faculty Road and Route 1 while the search was conducted. 

Princeton University Public Safety, Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad, Cranbury First Aid, Princeton Fire Department, Trenton Fire Department Dive Team and Prospect Heights Fire Department also responded to the scene.
