Princeton Voters Approve the $10.9 Million Bond Referendum

Voters on Monday approved a $10.9 million bond referendum for facilities improvements for Princeton Public Schools by a vote of 1238-571 according to unofficial results from the Princeton Township Clerk's Office, which released the votes for the consolidated voting districts.

The district plans to turn the old John Witherspoon Middle School gym into a media center, energy efficiencies throughout the district, install new safety surfaces for the elementary school playgrounds, purchase generator for the middle school and upgrade the baseball facilities.

The district estimates tax impact will be less than $150 a year for the average assessed home in Princeton.

The projects will go out for bid this fall and are expected to be completed within 18 months, Superintendent Judy Wilson said. 

School districts in New Jersey are subject to an annual 2 percent annual budget cap, which school officials say can often limit their ability to fund larger capital maintenance projects.

Many of the projects will address facilities that have been neglected for a decade or more.
