Rain Washes Out Kids' Sheehan, but Not Smiles
Though rain and lightning caused organizers to cancel Friday's kids' races, there was still plenty to smile about, including cupcakes.
A total loss would have been missing out on post-race cupcakes. Despite the Sheehan Kids Classic at Marine Park being rained out Friday night, kids from all over the area, as young as one and as old as 13, were treated to sweets and smoothies and even balloon hats for making the trek out.
Just a few minutes before race time as the kids were organized and participating in some relatively close facsimile to stretching the skies opened up and the rain started to fall. Lightning crashed nearby, even as the sun shown brightly just beyond the passing system. Though organizers waited a good 15 minutes, the rain only fell harder, prompting a cancelation of all the day’s races.
Though there were some sad faces as parents told their kids that they wouldn’t be able to race this year, each child, in addition to getting their hands on some sweet treats, earned a medal for participating.
