Red Bank Firefighters Honored for Heroic Action

Volunteer firefighters Alan Soden, Jr. and Bruce MacDonald, both former chiefs, recognized at borough council meeting.

When Red Bank Volunteer Firefighters arrived at a working fire on Leroy Place in April last year, Alan Soden, Jr. and Bruce MacDonald weren’t sure if anyone remained inside. They were sure of one thing, however, that they needed to go in and find out.

Soden and MacDonald, both former department chiefs and current volunteer firefighters, received commendations from Red Bank Council Wednesday night for their heroic efforts in saving a woman’s life.

Council President Art Murphy said the efforts of Soden and MacDonald serve to not only highlight the importance of the firefighters and the job they do each day without much more than simple thanks, but also set an example for the department’s younger members about what it takes to be a fireman.

“I want to thank you both for your bravery, but I also want to thank you for leading by example,” he said.

During the April 18, 2010 fire, MacDonald said the two men gained entry to the home and, upon finding a locked door, knew that someone was inside. Soden kicked down the door and the two men were able to rescue a woman who was trapped inside of the building with her pet cat.

Both men said they were pleased with the honor, but coming from firefighting families, there was really was never any choice. Saving lives is just something they’ve got to do.

“It’s an honor for them to recognize us,” MacDonald said.

Soden furthered MacDonald’s sentiments.

“It’s great,” Soden said of the honor. “That one word is all you need.”
