2 Men Engage In Daytime Shootout At Bergen County Intersection, 1 At Large: Prosecutor

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — After two men engaged in a shootout in Bergen County during rush hour Tuesday morning, one has been arrested and one is at large, prosecutors said Friday.

Mikhi Maddox Doum, 20, of Garfield was arrested and Jonathan M. Ortiz, 20, of Garfield is at large, said the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors said the Garfield Police Department received several calls around 9 a.m. about a shooting at Palisade Avenue and Somerset Street.

When they arrived, they found evidence of gunfire, but no victims or perpetrators.

Representatives from the County Prosecutor's and Sheriff's Office arrived to help investigate.

Investigators determined that seven gunshots were fired in the street between two men who had an "altercation." Then they fled, prosecutors say.

Ortiz was charged with second-degree aggravated assault by attempting to cause serious bodily injury by discharging a firearm, fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, and weapons charges. But he remains at large.

A SWAT Team and others searched his home in Garfield and found the gun used in the shooting, prosecutors say.

On Wednesday, Odum's home was searched — with children present — and detectives recovered the gun, prosecutors said.

He was arrested without incident.

He was charged with second-degree aggravated assault by attempting to cause serious bodily injury by discharging a firearm, fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, a weapons charge, and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail to await his first appearance in the Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
