RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Diaper need — the struggle to provide clean, dry diapers for babies — adversely affects child health, parental mental health and family financial well-being, Children's Aid and Family Services Director Sheila Riccardi said.

In support of National Diaper Need Awareness Week, Stop & Shop in Ridgewood donated 20,000 diapers to Baby Basics, a program of Children's Aid and Family Services, during an event Wednesday at the Franklin Avenue store, Riccardi said.

Baby Basics provides diapers and other baby essentials to low-income families with children ages newborn through two years old across Bergen, Essex and Passaic Counties. The program has helped more than 500 families in need and distributed more than 350,000 diapers in 2021.

The event Wednesday helped kick-off a two-day (Sept. 30 and Oct. 1) diaper drive at the store.

"A special thank you to Stop and Shop for recognizing this vital need and helping keep babies happy, health and dry," the social services organization said in a Facebook post.
