Wyckoff Tavern

The popular Café Amici in Wyckoff closed in June, but the owners said they had something special planned. This month, they reopened the space as Wyckoff Tavern. They source locally owned, sustainable items. The menu features poultry entrees, pork chops, veal, salmon, burgers, pizza, pasta, craft cocktails, and more. "Experience local tavern vibes with timeless charm and a modern pub twist," they said. They're located at 315 Franklin Ave. Find out more about Wyckoff Tavern here.

Little Mingo Café

Emrah and Merve Aykanat of Rutherford always dreamed of owning a restaurant. Emrah has been an executive chef for 20 years, but starting a business isn't easy. They decided to start small. On Sept. 8, the pair opened Little Mingo, a slim breakfast, coffee, and dessert shop on Hoboken’s historic First Street. They serve up a variety of waffles and sweet crepes, from Oreo Island to Tropical Twirl. They also offer varieties of coffee and espresso, a menu of herbal teas, and desserts. Emrah said he got the name from his nephews, who can’t pronounce flamingo but say “Mingo.” Little Mingo Café is located at 305 First St., Hoboken. Read more about it here.

Toastique

The fifth New Jersey location of a national sandwich, toast, and bowl cafe opened in Morristown in August. Toastique offers fresh ingredients and healthy breakfast and lunch items, as well as smoothies and fresh juices. The highlight is artisan toast, including the crab toast featuring lump crab, melted Swiss and fontina cheeses, and vegetables, and the avocado smash toast, which includes avocado, watermelon radish, marinated tomatoes, chili oil, and microgreens. The eatery also offers gluten-free options. It's located at 70 Speedwell Ave. The other New Jersey locations are Chatham, Hoboken, Ridgewood, and Stone Harbor. Find out more here.

Call Me Mia

And now, in honor of National Coffee Day...

Giovanni and Dominique Bove were visiting Italy with their young daughter when a restaurant owner noticed them struggling to keep her busy. He pushed aside a drape and voila -- a play area, so that mom and dad could eat in peace. The couple wanted to re-create that aspect in their own café. Call Me Mia, a coffee shop in downtown Jersey City, opened right before summer. They serve up coffee and chai drinks, European pastries, and more, and there's a place for kids to play in the back. It even includes a mini-coffee shop! Watch for a separate story on the café this week. Call Me Mia is located at 363 Second St., Jersey City. Find out more.

What's Closing And Coming Soon

Besides the new restaurants that have opened their doors over the summer, some have come to an end. And others have announced they'll open soon.

  • The Country Store, a 105-year-old general store and sandwich shop in River Vale, closed for good this past Thursday. Rick, one of the owners, talked about why they had to close in this story.
  • Pinstripes in Paramus, part of a chain of Italian restaurant/bowling venues — otherwise known as "eatertainment" — closed abruptly this month after the company declared bankruptcy. Eight stores will remain across the U.S., but the Paramus store was a casualty.
  • First Watch, a breakfast and lunch chain that offers a bevy of interesting takes on pancakes, omlets, and more, plans to open in Paramus soon. Read more about that here.
