Bakery Featured On 'Only Murders In Building' To Open Its First NJ Store In Bergen County
Schmackary's Bakery, whose cookies were featured on 'Only Murders In The Building,' will open a NJ location soon in Bergen County.

NORTH JERSEY — Husband-and-wife restaurant owners plan to open the first New Jersey location of Schmackary’s, an award-winning bakeshop headquartered in New York City, this week.
The new franchise will open in Englewood with some giveaways on Thursday, Aug. 22, said a company spokesperson.
Husband and wife Richipal Bindra and Sonia Kaur "are the local New Jersey franchisees who were smitten with Schmackary’s after visiting the flagship location," said a spokesperson.

“Between their business model, incredible numbers and soul-filled culture, we were sold instantly,” said Bindra last week.
Schmackary’s opened in Manhattan’s Theatre District in 2012. Recently, the cookies made a cameo on Hulu’s hit show, "Only Murders in The Building," with their “Death Rattle Velvet”
cookie playing a key role in the plot.

Opening day festivities and specials for the new Schmackary’s location, at 41 W. Palisade Ave., will include:
Opening Day Festivities
11 a.m.: Husbands Zach Schmahl and Jonny Polizzi of Schmackary’s, as well as Bindra and Kaur, will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony. The store will open at the conclusion of the ceremony.
Noon until 10 p.m. closing: 20 percent off the purchase of a dozen cookies.
5-7 p.m.: One free cookie to each guest visiting the store, as well as brownie and bar tastings.
The store is the first franchise for Schmackary’s since announcing expansion plans in May 2023, but the company has plans to open 13 Schmackary’s in the Northern New Jersey and New York City markets, said the spokesperson.
“It brings me great joy to celebrate the grand opening of our first franchise location in Englewood, New Jersey," said Zach Schmahl. "Richipal and Sonia are exemplary franchisees whose dedication and enthusiasm embody the spirit of Schmackary’s. Our Northern New Jersey customers can now enjoy our delicious cookies and coffee without the trek into the city."
“We were comparing every franchise we could, but none of them stood out. That was, until we found Schmackary’s,” said Bindra. “Between their business model, incredible numbers, and soul-filled culture, we were sold instantly.”
Two other locations are set to open in New York City later this year, they said.
