Bergen Country Club Sues Waiter Who Ruined Woman’s $30K Bag

The Alpine Country Club's legal action is in response to a member's lawsuit seeking the value of her bag, which was damaged during a meal.

DEMAREST, NJ – The Bergen County country club that was sued by a member after a waiter spilled red wine on her $30,000 pink Hermes clutch reportedly claims the staffer is liable for the accident.

In October, Maryana Beyder filed a lawsuit against the Alpine Country Club for the value of her bag after it was damaged beyond repair during a September 2018 meal.

Beyder tried for nearly a year to sort out the matter with the club directly, but they were dismissive and eventually unresponsive, prompting her to pursue legal action. Her suit also claims the club was negligent in hiring the waiter who spilled the drink.

In court documents filed Monday, the posh country club insisted it wasn’t liable for the damage to her purse, NorthJersey.com reported, in addition to suing its own employee.

The waiter has not been identified and has only been referred to as “John Doe” in Beyder’s suit.

Located in Demarest, Alpine Country Club members are reportedly required to pay a $65,000 initiation fee, plus $19,000 in dues annually. The 196-acre property includes an 18-hole golf course, five tennis courts, a fitness facility, several dining establishments and a "resort style pool facility."

“She didn’t wear it apple picking. She wore it to a very expensive country club where she was a member,” Beyder’s attorney, Alexandra Errico told NJ.com. “If you bring your car to a country club and it gets scratched up, you expect the club to pay for it.”
