Bergenfield Will Soon Have An Aldi And A Lidl
The two grocery stores will be located less than a half mile away from each other.

BERGENFIELD, NJ – German discount grocery chain Aldi plans to open a store in Bergenfield less than a half mile away from one of its competitors, Lidl.
An opening date for Aldi’s 12,000-square-foot store at 426 South Washington Avenue has not yet been announced but the chain says it’ll be sometime next year. Job postings have already been put on Aldi’s website for the new location.
Founded nearly 60 years ago in Germany by the Albrecht family,the chain arrived in the United States in 1976. Over the last four decades, it has become known for its low prices and private label brands.

With about 1,800 locations in 35 states, Aldi is halfway through a $5.3 billion, five-year expansion initiative that will grow its store base by almost 50% and modernize most of its existing stores.

Over the last few years, Aldi has been steadily expanding across New Jersey, by building new stores and revamping old ones. Within northern New Jersey, there are Aldi locations in Hackensack, Lodi, Clifton and East Rutherford. The chain just recently signed a lease in Totowa.

Meanwhile, Lidl, also a German-based grocery chain, will open its Bergenfield store on Dec. 18.
Located at 80 New Bridge Road, the store, which was previously an Acme supermarket, will open its doors at exactly 7:40 a.m. on opening day. The first 100 customers will get a gift card valued between $5 and $100. The grand opening weekend will feature all types of games, activities and prizes, according to the report.

The Bergenfield store is Lidl's first location in Bergen County and sixth in New Jersey. It will be open Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In 2018, Lidl was ranked by Food & Wine magazine as the third best grocery in the U.S., above Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Aldi.
The chain utilizes cost-cutting measures to keep prices down, such as foregoing checkout bags and not carrying many name brands.
