Car Thefts, Burglaries On The Rise In Bergen, Prosecutor Warns
'Thieves are cruising our streets, looking for unlocked cars and they know just how to spot them, authorities said.
Bergen County officials issued a warning about increased vehicle thefts and burglaries.
A video posted by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office shows thieves and burglars breaking into vehicles in residents' driveways.
Thieves are "roaming quiet neighborhoods overnight, coming onto your property and pulling on car door handles," Robert Anzilotti, chief of detectives for the prosecutor's office, said in the video.

"In the past few months, Bergen County has seen an increase in the theft of cars and cars being stolen," Anzilotti said."This is occurring in all areas of the county."
One tell-tale sign that a luxury vehicle has been left open are the side-view mirrors. They face in when a vehicle is locked and out when it is not.

Open vehicles are rummaged through and valuables and other things like change are stolen. Sometimes, the vehicle is also taken.
"Of greater concern to us is the fact that many times when vehicles are stolen, it is not be done for the value of the car, but as a means to commit other offenses," including violent crimes, Anzilotti said.
Anyone who sees anything suspicious in person or on a home surveillance system should contact their local police department, Anzilotti said.
