Christie Taps Glen Rock Man as Next Bergen County Prosecutor

Glen Rock resident Gurbir Grewal was appointed Thursday by Gov. Chris Christie to become the county’s next top law enforcement official, replacing longtime Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.

Molinelli, a Democrat, was first appointed by Gov. Jim McGreevy in 2002. His second term expired in January, but Christie delayed a decision on an appointment for months.

Grewal currently works in the U.S. Attorney’s Office as the deputy chief of the Economic Crims Unit and Computer Hacking and IP Crimes Unit. He has also worked as a federal prosecutor on securities and business fraud in New York.

Grewal attended Georgetown University and the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary. He is also a past president of the South Asian Bar Association of New York.

“With his experience as a federal prosecutor in New Jersey and New York, Mr. Grewal has the right credentials and background to be the chief law enforcement officer for Bergen County,” Christie said in a release. “He also brings diversity to a highly diverse county, which will serve him and the community well.”

According to Northjersey.com, Grewal will be the first Sikh to serve in the post.

“It’s excellent news for the community, because I think he is one of what we call the new generation, born here, raised here and someone who went to school here and is a full-fledged Sikh,” Karmjit Singh Sidhu, the president of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sikh temple in Glen Rock, told the Record.

Grewal will serve a five-year term at the helm of the prosecutor's office, pending confirmation from the state senate.
