Earthquake Rocks Bergen County NJ On Friday

The USGS reported a 2.4 magnitude earthquake southeast of Paramus, NJ.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — An Earthquake rattled Bergen County shortly after 1 p.m. Friday, according to the USGS.

The 2.4 magnitude quake was centered southeast of Paramus, officials said.

Bergen County's Office of Emergency Management said they were "confirming an earthquake through the USGS that has impacted the Paramus area. It is reported to be magnitude of 2.4. Please call 9-1-1 to report emergencies only."

They added, "No reports of serious damage have been reported at this time. We will continue to monitor this situation and issue further alerts as warranted."

The USGS put the time of the quake at 1:02 p.m.

One resident said the tremors "sounded like a car hit the house."

A Patch reader in Haworth reported that it "felt like a big tree had slammed to the ground nearby, or like there had been an explosion nearby (but no explosion sound), maybe like when they detonated the Tappan-Zee."

Aftershocks from an earthquake can be felt for days and weeks afterward, and are sometimes forecast by the USGS here.

One Of Several

The quake is one of several felt in North Jersey in the past nine months. Much of North Jersey felt a 4.8 earthquake last April 5, also on a Friday.
