Fallen Trees Close Road, Force Apartment Evacuation In Bergen County

High winds toppled trees into roadways and buildings in Bergen County. The NWS released its wind gust reports.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — High winds on Wednesday night toppled trees in Bergen County, closing a road in Ridgewood and forcing the evacuation of an apartment building.

Apartments on the 600 block of Bruce Street in Ridgefield had to be evacuated in the wee hours after a tree fell onto the complex, the Ridgefield Fire Department said.

First responders arrived at the scene shortly before 1:30 a.m.. While no one was trapped inside the apartments, residents were temporarily relocated due to the damage, authorities said.

There were no injuries, firefighters said.

In Ridgewood, winds dropped a large tree across the 300 block of South Irving Street.

Captain Glenn Ender told Patch just before 8 a.m. that the road had recently reopened.

"Ridgewood Shade Tree just finished clearing the road 10 minutes ago," he said. "The road has been reopened, there was no property damage from the fallen tree."

Downed trees and downed wires were reported around North Jersey.

Bergen County weather spotters reported wind gusts as high as 55 MPH at Teterboro Airport and 40 MPH in Hackensack, they said.
